Dignified

  • Pictures taken whilst on a UN mission to Borno State, Northeast Nigeria. Since 2009, Borno State has been the epicentre of the ongoing non-international armed conflict that has shattered lives and livelihoods, devastated the already underdeveloped economy and infrastructure, and resulted in the forcible displacement of millions, many of whom women and children, who became desperately dependent on international aid for survival. Selection offers a glimpse into the everyday life of internally displaced people (IDPs), the onerous daily and inescapable chores of fetching water and firewood, the physical and built environment of their camps, the interiors and exteriors of their temporary shelters, the rudimentariness of their schools, and the waiting in suspense to be housed. The pictures are also about their humanity and dignity. Their standing-tall bodies despite the harsh and often undignifying conditions. Some, not all, images are captioned to provide more insight and context. Those captioned relate to key issues and challenges facing IDPs, such as displacement, food insecurity, camp congestion, homelessness, disease outbreak, and inadequate services.
