Bedrooms

A neighbourhood in Hackney

One neighbourhood, two households

Clemence (pseudonym) lives with her two daughters, husband and dog in an Edwardian townhouse with a garden in a gentrified/ing part of Hackney, East London. Hope (pseudonym), a university graduate, pregnant (when photo was taken) with two children under the age of five, lives in a one-bedroom flat with her husband and his mother. Clemence and Hope live about five-minute walk from each other. The selection of pictures, taken in May/June 2019, are part of an ongoing project entitled bedrooms. The project is not about vilifying the gentrifiers or victimising those who cannot access decent housing but about the housing crisis and the lack of adequate, affordable housing. It’s a comment on the commodification of housing that drives people to live in compromised housing conditions and about the right to the city. Decent, affordable housing for all! A right to the city for all!
